Help Us Make Cocoa Farming Sustainable

Cocoa provides a livelihood for an estimated 40 million people in the tropics. And since cocoa flourishes under the shade of the forest canopy, it is an ideal crop for conservation.

Unfortunately, many cocoa farmers have abandoned traditional methods of cultivation and begun clearing their land to grow cocoa in the sun. While this approach may increase short-term yields, it results in the destruction of wildlife habitat and causes soil erosion. Sun-grown cocoa also depends on the use of agrochemicals, which can lead to water contamination and health problems.

The Rainforest Alliance is helping to ensure a sustainable future for cocoa farmers in western Africa and Latin America by providing them with the tools they need to protect their crops, forests and livelihoods. We're also teaching farmers how to increase their productivity, conserve the environment and ensure the well-being of their workers.

Cocoa farmers working with the Rainforest Alliance report real differences on their land, including cleaner and more organized farms, more tree cover, better housing, higher incomes and increased crop yields.

Donate to the Rainforest Alliance and help improve the lives and livelihoods of cocoa farmers around the globe.
